Landscape lighting installation and security lighting in Columbus GA

Good outdoor lighting makes a home look finished after dark and makes it safer to come home to. Professional landscape lighting installation from Sherrill Co. covers walkways, trees, beds and the front of the house, plus motion floodlights, dock lighting and smart doorbells like Ring, all wired properly for rain, heat and Georgia humidity.

We plan the lights, the wiring and the controls together, so everything comes on when it should and keeps working year after year. Every landscape lighting installation starts with a walk around the property with you.

How our landscape lighting installation works

Outdoor lighting only looks good when it's planned. Every landscape lighting installation and security lighting job we do follows these five steps.

  1. Walk the property

We look at the house, the yard and how you use it after dark: paths, steps, the driveway, the patio, the dock and the dark corners.

  2. Plan lights and controls

We pick fixture types and placement, then decide what runs on a timer, a photocell, motion sensors or a smart app.

  3. Run the wiring

Low voltage cable for landscape lights, and properly protected line voltage circuits for floods and dock power, buried or hidden where it should be.

  4. Set and aim the fixtures

We set every fixture, aim uplights and floods so they light the target and not the neighbors' windows, and hide the hardware.

  5. Night check and follow up

We check the lights after dark whenever we can, fine tune the aim, and call a few days later to see how it looks.

Light up the house, one zone at a time

Turn each zone on to see how layered outdoor lighting comes together after dark. Most homes start with the walkway and the front entry, then add uplights and security floods. Every zone is something we handle as part of a landscape lighting installation.

Outdoor lighting tips from the field

After years of lighting yards, docks and driveways around Columbus, these are the things that make the biggest difference in a landscape lighting installation. They are also the questions we talk through with you before we pick a single fixture.

  • Warm color looks better Around 2700K to 3000K LED gives a warm glow that flatters brick, stone and plants. Cooler light can look harsh.
  • Light the path, not the eyes Path lights should point down, and floods should be aimed so they don't glare into windows or at the street.
  • Less is often more A few well placed uplights and path lights usually look better than lighting every inch of the yard.
  • Controls matter Photocells turn lights on at dusk, timers turn them off late at night, and motion sensors save the floods for when they're needed.
  • Built for the weather Outdoor fixtures, connections and outlets need to be rated for wet locations, and line voltage runs need GFCI protection where required.

What affects landscape lighting installation cost

Every yard is different, so we price the job after we walk it. These are the things that move the number up or down.

  1. Number of fixturesMore lights and more zones mean more fixtures, wire and connections.

  2. Low voltage or line voltageLandscape lights run on a low voltage transformer. Floodlights and dock power need line voltage circuits.

  3. Distance and terrainLong runs, trenching across lawns and routes under walkways or driveways add time.

  4. Fixture qualitySolid brass and well sealed LED fixtures cost more up front but hold up far longer outdoors.

  5. ControlsPhotocells, timers, motion sensors and smart app control each add a little to the setup.

A dock lighting job, in the customer's words

"JR and his team rewired my boat dock including the installation of new lights. They did a very professional job on all aspects of this boat dock work. They also installed some new lights in the kitchen and converted two old fluorescent light fixtures for use with new LED bulbs. We are very happy with their work and will ask for JR and these guys by name on any future electrical work we might need."

How much does landscape lighting installation cost?

It depends on how many fixtures and zones you want, whether they run on low voltage or line voltage, how far the wire has to travel and the quality of the fixtures. A few path lights and uplights is a much smaller job than a full yard with security floods and dock lighting. We walk the property and give you a clear price for the plan.

What is the difference between low voltage and line voltage outdoor lighting?

Low voltage landscape lighting runs on a transformer that steps power down to about 12 volts. It is safe, efficient and ideal for path lights, uplights and wash lights. Line voltage lighting runs on standard 120 volt circuits and is used for floodlights, wall lights and dock power, and it needs outdoor rated wiring and GFCI protection where required.

How many path lights do I need?

Most walkways look best with path lights spaced about 6 to 8 feet apart and staggered from side to side, rather than lined up like a runway. The exact count depends on the length of the path, the fixture and how bright you want it.

Can you install a Ring doorbell?

Yes. We install Ring and other smart doorbells, and we check the doorbell transformer so the device gets enough power to stay charged and online. If there is no existing doorbell wiring, we can run new wire to the right spot.

Do you install lighting and power on boat docks?

Yes. We install dock lighting, post lights and outlets on docks, with outdoor rated equipment and GFCI protection for wet locations. It is one of the jobs our customers mention in their reviews.

Can outdoor lights turn on and off by themselves?

Yes. Photocells turn lights on at dusk and off at dawn, timers turn them off at a set time, motion sensors run floodlights only when needed, and many systems can be controlled from a phone app. We set up the controls that fit how you use your yard.

Is LED landscape lighting worth it?

For most homes, yes. LED fixtures use a fraction of the power of old halogen lights, last far longer and stay cooler. Warm color LEDs around 2700K to 3000K look natural on brick, stone and plants.

Do you install landscape and security lighting in Phenix City and Auburn?

Yes. We are licensed in Georgia and Alabama and handle landscape lighting installation and security lighting in Columbus, Fortson and Cataula as well as Phenix City, Smiths Station, Opelika and Auburn. See our service area for the full list.
