Ceiling fan installation and lighting in Columbus GA

A new fan or light fixture looks simple until you find there's no fan rated box, the wiring is decades old or the switch doesn't do what it should. Professional ceiling fan installation and lighting work from Sherrill Co. means the fan is hung solid, balanced and quiet, and every light is wired right the first time.

We handle ceiling fans, light fixtures, chandeliers, recessed lighting, LED conversions and replacement motors for bath fans, vent fans, pool pumps and spas. No job is too small to call about.

How our ceiling fan installation works

Whether it's one ceiling fan installation or new lighting for every room, we follow the same steps so the fixture is safe, solid and looks right when we leave.

  1. Tell us the project

One fan or a whole house of fixtures? Existing wiring or a brand new spot? A photo of the ceiling and the fixture box helps a lot.

  2. Check the box and wiring

We confirm the ceiling box is fan rated, add bracing when needed, and check the wiring and the switch before anything goes up.

  3. Run new wiring if needed

New locations, added switches, dimmers or a separate fan and light control get wired properly, with as little ceiling damage as possible.

  4. Hang, balance and connect

We assemble and hang the fan or fixture, balance the blades, set the downrod height and connect the remote or wall control.

  5. Test and clean up

We test every speed, light and switch, haul off the boxes, and call a few days later to make sure everything works the way you want.

What size ceiling fan do you need?

A fan that's too small barely moves the air, and one that's too big feels like a helicopter. The right size depends on the room, and the right mounting depends on the ceiling height.

Enter your room and ceiling height and the guide will suggest a blade span and downrod length. We check both again during every ceiling fan installation.

When to call an electrician

Some homeowners handle a simple swap themselves. It's time to call a licensed electrician when any of these sound familiar.

  • There's no fan rated box A regular light box isn't built to hold a spinning fan. A fan hung from one can loosen and fall.
  • It's a brand new location Adding a fan or light where there was none means running new wire and adding a switch.
  • The wiring looks old or damaged Brittle insulation, cloth wiring, scorch marks or loose connections need an electrician's attention.
  • The switch doesn't behave Lights that flicker, switches that feel warm or a fan and light on one switch you want separated.
  • The ceiling is high or vaulted Tall ladders, sloped ceilings and heavy chandeliers are safer with the right equipment and two people.

Not sure? Send a photo of the ceiling box and your new fixture to service@sherrillcompany.com and we'll tell you what it needs.

What affects ceiling fan installation cost

Every ceiling is different, so we price the job after we know what's there. These are the things that move the number up or down.

  1. Replacement or new locationSwapping a fixture on an existing box is quicker than running new wire to a new spot.

  2. Box and bracingInstalling a fan rated box and bracing adds a little time but is essential for safety.

  3. Ceiling height and accessHigh, vaulted or hard to reach ceilings and attics without access take more setup.

  4. ControlsDimmers, separate fan and light switches, and remote or smart controls add parts and wiring.

  5. Number of fixturesDoing several fans or lights on one visit is usually more efficient than scheduling them one by one.

A lighting job, in the customer's words

"JR and his team rewired my boat dock including the installation of new lights. They did a very professional job on all aspects of this boat dock work. They also installed some new lights in the kitchen and converted two old fluorescent light fixtures for use with new LED bulbs. We are very happy with their work and will ask for JR and these guys by name on any future electrical work we might need."

How much does ceiling fan installation cost?

Replacing a fan on an existing fan rated box is the simplest job. Installing a fan where there was only a light, adding bracing, running new wire to a new location, or working on a high or vaulted ceiling adds time and materials. We give you a clear price once we know what the ceiling and wiring look like, and a photo usually tells us most of it.

Can you install a ceiling fan where there is no light?

Yes. We run new wiring from a nearby circuit, install a fan rated box with proper bracing and add a wall switch or remote control. We plan the route through the attic or walls to keep ceiling damage to a minimum.

Can any light fixture box hold a ceiling fan?

No. A ceiling fan needs a box that is rated for fan support and anchored to the framing. A standard light box can work loose from the weight and motion of a fan over time. We check the box during every ceiling fan installation and replace or brace it when needed.

What size ceiling fan do I need?

As a general guide, rooms up to 75 square feet take a 29 to 36 inch fan, 76 to 144 square feet take 36 to 44 inches, 145 to 225 square feet take 44 to 50 inches, and 226 to 400 square feet take 50 to 60 inches. Use the size guide on this page for your room and ceiling height.

Can you convert old fluorescent fixtures to LED?

Yes. We either replace the old fixture with a new LED fixture or rewire it to run LED tubes without the old ballast. It is brighter, uses less power and ends the buzzing and flicker. One of our customers had two kitchen fixtures converted this way along with new lights.

Do you install recessed lighting in finished ceilings?

Yes. Slim LED wafer lights and remodel style cans are made for existing ceilings, and we plan the layout and wiring so the lights are evenly spaced and controlled by the right switch or dimmer.

Can you replace a bathroom exhaust fan?

Yes. We replace noisy or dead bath exhaust fans, and we can upgrade to a quieter model or one with a light or humidity sensor. We also make sure the fan is vented properly and not just blowing into the attic.

Do you install ceiling fans and lighting in Phenix City and Auburn?

Yes. We are licensed in Georgia and Alabama and handle ceiling fan installation and lighting in Columbus, Fortson and Cataula as well as Phenix City, Smiths Station, Opelika and Auburn. See our service area for the full list.
